Our soapstone carvings come from the Kisii region in Kenya East Africa. The soapstone, also called Kisii stone, is a soft stone that will absorb water and become even softer making it easier to carve. Sometimes, the artisan will add pigmentation to the stone making it black or multi-colored for added appeal. Soapstone naturally comes in a wide variety of colors. In this region it is usually an off-white, or it may have some shades/streaks of grays or pinks.
